Tuya Not Connecting to Wi-Fi? 5 Common Causes and Fixes
Why pairing fails, when to use AP mode, and what to check before you reset everything again.
Quick Answer
If your Tuya or Smart Life device will not connect to Wi-Fi, the cause is usually one of these: you are using a 5 GHz network instead of 2.4 GHz, the device is not in the correct pairing mode, EZ mode fails and AP mode is needed, app permissions are incomplete, or the router / Wi-Fi password has changed and the device needs to be paired again.

Why this happens so often
Many users assume a Tuya device fails to connect because the product is defective. In reality, Wi-Fi setup problems are usually caused by the network environment or the pairing process itself. A smart switch, relay, meter, or circuit breaker may power on normally, but still fail to join the network if the phone is on the wrong Wi-Fi band, the indicator is blinking in the wrong mode, or the router settings changed recently.
That is why repeating the same setup steps over and over often does not help. A better approach is to check the few most common causes one by one.
1. The device only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
This is the most common reason Tuya Wi-Fi devices fail during setup. Many Tuya-based devices are designed for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and do not support 5 GHz pairing. If your phone is connected to a 5 GHz network during setup, the app may keep searching, fail to find the device, or stop during pairing.
This is especially common with dual-band routers that combine 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under the same network name. From the user side, everything looks normal. From the device side, it is trying to join a network it cannot use.
What to do:
- Connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network before pairing.
- If your router combines both bands under one SSID, temporarily split them if possible.
- Move closer to the router during the first setup, especially if the device is installed inside an electrical cabinet or distribution board.
2. The device is not in the correct pairing mode
Another common problem is that the device has been reset, but not into the pairing mode the app expects.
On many Tuya devices, a fast blinking indicator usually means EZ mode, while a slow blinking indicator usually means AP mode. If the device is blinking in one mode and you are trying to add it in the other, the process may fail even though the device looks ready.
Different device types may have slightly different reset methods, but the principle is the same: make sure the blinking state matches the mode you selected in the app.
What to do:
- Reset the device again and watch the indicator carefully.
- If the app asks for EZ mode, confirm the indicator is blinking quickly.
- If you switch to AP mode, confirm the indicator is blinking slowly.
3. EZ mode fails, but AP mode can still work
EZ mode is the faster and simpler setup method, so most users try it first. But it is not always the most reliable one. In real home networks, AP mode often works better when EZ mode keeps failing.
This is common with dual-band routers, stronger router security settings, unstable signals, or phones that behave differently during onboarding. The result is familiar: the app finds the device, starts pairing, then stops before completion. That does not always mean the device is bad. It often means the pairing method is not ideal for the network.
In AP mode, the phone temporarily connects to the device hotspot first, which usually makes the process more stable.
What to do:
- Try EZ mode first for speed.
- If EZ mode fails, reset the device and switch to AP mode.
- Follow the app carefully when it asks you to join the device hotspot.
Tip: If pairing fails more than once in EZ mode, do not keep repeating the same step. Switching to AP mode is usually a faster fix than trying EZ mode five more times.
4. The app does not have the right permissions
Device discovery is not only about Wi-Fi. In some cases, the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app also needs local device discovery permissions to work properly. If Bluetooth is off, or your phone blocks the required permissions, the app may fail to find nearby devices or stall during the pairing process.
This issue is easy to miss because the app still opens normally, and the device still powers on. Everything looks fine on the surface, but the phone is quietly blocking part of the discovery process.
What to check:
- Wi-Fi is enabled on your phone.
- Bluetooth is enabled.
- The app has the permissions it needs on your phone.
- You are using the correct app account and the correct region if required.
5. Your router, Wi-Fi name, or password changed
If the device used to work before and now suddenly does not connect, this is one of the first things to check.
After changing the router, resetting the router, renaming the Wi-Fi, or changing the password, many Tuya Wi-Fi devices need to be paired again. Even if the new router uses the “same” Wi-Fi name and password, the device may still fail because the network credentials are stored and handled differently after the change.
This often happens after users upgrade home internet equipment or replace the ISP router. The device is not broken. It is simply holding old network information.
What to do:
- Reset the device.
- Open the app and add it again from the beginning.
- Make sure you enter the current 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi name and password.
A quick checklist before trying again
- Is your phone connected to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?
- Is the device in the correct pairing mode?
- Did you try AP mode after EZ mode failed?
- Are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and required app permissions enabled?
- Did your router, Wi-Fi name, or password change recently?
- Is the signal strong enough at the installation location?
A quick note on Zigbee devices
If your product is a Zigbee device, this guide is not the full answer. Zigbee devices do not connect to the router directly like Wi-Fi devices do. They need to be added through a compatible Zigbee gateway first.

FAQ
Why is my Tuya device not connecting to Wi-Fi?
The most common reasons are using 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz, the wrong pairing mode, incomplete app permissions, or old Wi-Fi information stored after a router or password change.
Does Tuya only work on 2.4 GHz?
Many Tuya Wi-Fi devices are designed to connect through 2.4 GHz networks during setup. If pairing fails, always confirm your phone is on 2.4 GHz first.
What is the difference between EZ mode and AP mode?
EZ mode is the faster standard setup method. AP mode is usually more stable when EZ mode fails, because the phone connects to the device hotspot first before completing pairing.
Do I need to reconnect the device after changing my router?
In many cases, yes. If the router, Wi-Fi name, or password changed, the device often needs to be reset and paired again.
